A silver goal from Luke Chadwick secured a memorable All-Ireland Schoolboys Championships victory for Wesley College yesterday, as they saw off Wallace High 3-2 in the decider at Campbell College yesterday.
Chadwick batted home a rebound 45 seconds before half-time in extra time, sparking wild celebrations in the Dubliners’ camp, as they finally got their hands on the silverware after losing last year’s final to St Andrew’s.
Wesley had earlier accounted for favourites Banbridge Academy 3-1 in the last four, while Wallace hammered Ashton 4-1 in the other semi-final thanks largely to Matthew Murphy’s hat-trick.
Stephen Hunter had given Wallace a half-time lead, but Wesley equalised through a Peter English drag-flick — the eighth of the tournament for the Railway Union man.
Rob Cole’s fortuitous deflection gave Wesley the lead, but Hunter reined them in with his second goal to force extra time, before Chadwick decided it.
